TULSA, Okla. (Jan. 22, 2017) – The Wyoming women’s tennis team wrapped up its third day on Sunday at the Hurricane Invite in Tulsa.
“We played some good tennis today just didn’t finish a few matches,” head coach Dean Clower said. “The ladies have been working very hard this past week and have improved a great deal. If we continue to make strides improving though out the semester we will be ready for conference.”
Doubles action started off the morning and it was a tough go for the Cowgirls. Freshmen Imogen Clews and Milka Genkova lost 6-1 against Marcelina Cichon and Mahitha Dadireddy followed by senior Dorottya Jonas and freshman Ana Tkachenko who dropped their match against Martha Matoula and Rongrong Leenabanchong, 6-3. Sophomores Elisa Koonik and Tessa Van Der Ploeg battled a tough pair in Ksenia Laskutova and Martina Oklahova but fell short 7-5.
In singles action, three Cowgirls went three sets each unfortunately didn’t come away with a win. Koonik won the opening set 7-5, but lost the next two, 6-3, 1-0 (10-5) against Matuoula. Genkova dropped the first set, 6-2, won the second 7-5 unfortunately dropped the last 1-0 (10-6). van Der Ploeg took set one 6-4, but fell 6-4, 1-0 (10-8) against Okalova.
Junior Magdalena Stencel lost her match against Laskutova in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4 followed by Cichon beating Tkachenko, 6-2, 6-3. The final Cowgirl in action Jonas lost to Lennanbanchong, 7-5, 6-1.
The Cowgirls return to dual play on next weekend against the Idaho Vandals and Gonzaga Bulldogs. They will face the Vandals on Saturday followed by a Sunday morning match against Gonzaga. Both will be played in Spokane.
