Wyoming Tennis Has Solid Second Day of Hurricane Invite

TULSA, Okla. (Jan. 21, 2017) -- All six singles players and three doubles teams earned wins as the Wyoming women’s tennis team continued play on Saturday at the Hurricane Invite.

“We started out pretty sluggish today but definitely finished the right way,” head coach Dean Clower said. “I like the way the team is coming together and finishing matches the right way. We are playing much more structured as a whole in singles. In doubles play, I’m hoping the upperclassmen will start helping the younger players so we are ready to go tomorrow and the rest of the semester.”

In singles action, junior Magdalena Stencel defeated Jovana Antonijevic, 6-0, 6-0. Senior Dorottya Jonas won in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, against Ceijenia Cornelius followed by freshman Milka Genkova with a 7-6, 6-4 victory over Petya Simeonova.

Freshman Imogen Clews didn’t drop a game in her 6-0, 6-0 win against Valentina Gisbert. The final two Cowgirls in action were senior Miranda Talbert and sophomore Tessa Van Der Ploeg.  Talbert defeated Brenda Mercado Jove, 7-5, 6-1, while van Der Ploeg beat Ximena Puentes, 6-0, 6-2.

Doubles play was solid as well for Wyoming. Sophomores Elisa Koonik and van Der Ploeg defeated Simeonova and Antonijevic, 6-1. Jonas and Tkachenko beat Cornelius and Vasiljevic, 6-0 but Puentes and Mercado Jove beat Clews and Genkova, 6-3.

The Cowgirls return to action tomorrow beginning at 10:30 a.m. MT.
