University of Wyoming Athletics Honors Graduating Seniors at Thursday Night Reception

LARAMIE, Wyo. -
On Thursday night, the University of Wyoming Athletics Department held a special reception for its student-athletes who are participating in 2014 spring semester graduation ceremonies this coming weekend. Approximately 30 Cowboy and Cowgirl student-athletes along with their families, UW faculty and UW Athletics coaching and administrative staffs attended the reception held in the Wildcatter Stadium Club & Suites at War Memorial Stadium.
The reception was a new event for UW Athletics. Each student-athlete was presented with an athletics graduation stole to wear along with the graduation stole from their college. The UW Athletics graduation stole is white with the familiar Steamboat Bucking Horse and Rider emblem on the right-hand side of the stole and a W-Club emblem on the left. Each graduating student-athlete will also receive a free W-Club membership for the coming year. The W-Club is the official organization for former Cowboy and Cowgirl student-athletes and coaches.
Julie Manning, Senior Associate Athletics Director for Sport Administration and Senior Woman Administrator helped to organize the inaugural event.
"The main thrust behind the reception was to provide our graduating student-athletes with special recognition for achieving this academic milestone," said Manning. "In the past couple of years, I've known other institutions that have conducted similar events. Student-Athlete Advisory Committees (SAAC) from a number of universities have also provided input that being recognized at graduation ceremonies in a unique way, in a different way than the regular student population is something they feel is a nice reward for their hard work.
"I think it pays the proper respect to the ceremony of graduation by presenting each of our graduating student-athletes with a special athletics graduation stole. Our stole being white with the brown and gold emblems should really stand out against the brown graduation gowns during graduation ceremonies this weekend."
