Fifty-Eight UW Student Athletes Named To MW Academic Team

The Mountain West Conference announced its spring 2014 Academic All-Conference team on Monday. The University of Wyoming student-athletes’ hard work in the classroom paid off with 58 Cowboys and Cowgirls making the list.
Among those recognized in the Brown and Gold were 16 women’s swimming and diving participants, followed by women’s track and field with 13. Men’s track and field had 10 honorees, followed by women’s basketball and men’s golf with five, women’s golf and women’s tennis with four and men’s basketball with one.
A total number of 897 student-athletes from across the MW made the list. The 897 student-athletes is a league record. The mark surpasses the previous Conference record of 783 spring semester honorees, set during the 2010-11 academic year.
Four UW student-athletes achieved perfect 4.0 GPAs, including senior tennis player Veronica Popovici (family and consumer science), graduate student hurdler Katy Hall (kinesiology), senior trackster Natalie Hurst (finance) and freshman trackster Danielle Alexander (elementary education). The average GPA of the 58 honorees was 3.56.
The UW contingent was comprised of 15 seniors, 15 freshman, 14 juniors, 10 sophomores and four graduate students.
UW was among 11 institutions represented on the list. In order to receive the honor, a student-athlete must have completed at least one academic semester/quarter at the member institution and have a cumulative grade-point average at the member institution of 3.0 or better. The student-athlete also must have competed in 50 percent of the team's varsity contests.
The spring sports represented on the team included baseball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's golf, softball, men's and women's swimming and diving, men's and women's tennis, as well as men's and women's track and field.
