Cowboys Win First WAC Dual of the Season

Freshman: (2012-13): Nelson put forth a banner freshman season for the Cowboys. Nelson earned First Team All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation honors in the 400 individual medley and the 1,650 freestyle. Ryan finished second in the 400 individual medley at the MPSF Championships, as he swam a school record time of 3:47.23, just shy of an NCAA qualifying mark. Nelson also made Cowboys history in the 1,650 freestyle, as he broke a 31 year old school record with a personal- best time of 15:16.77 (former record by Lynn Stetson, 15:23.52 in 1982). He also earned Second Team All-MPSF honors in the 500 freestyle with a personal-best time of 4:26.82. Nelson made 15 appearances in the top-five on the season, as he won four events on the season. Ryan finished 19th in the 400 individual medley at the Phillips 66 National Championships & World Championship Trials over the summer. After entering ranked 26th at 4:26.29, He swam at 4:29.29 in the prelims to sit 24th. He moved up to 19th with a 4:26.33 in the finals.

High School: Nelson joins the Cowboys as an excellent distance freestyle and individual medley swimmer from Edison High School in Huntington Beach, Calif. He was a four-year letterwinner for head coach Keith Ryan. He helped Edison to a Sunset League Conference Championship. He was also a 2012 Junior National Qualifier in four events. At the Junior Nationals, Nelson finished fourth in the 400 IM. He was also a Scholastic All-American during high school.

Personal: Nelson was born in Pasadena, Calif. His birthday is April 19, 1994. He is the son of Timothy and Irva Nelson. He has three siblings, Wade, Zachary and Dylan. Nelson is majoring in physiology at UW. He was also recruited by Indiana.
