Wyoming Swimming And Diving Loses At UC Irvine

Laramie, Wyo. (January 10, 2004) -- Both the University of Wyoming men's and women's swimming and diving teams fell to UC Irvine in a Saturday afternoon dual in Irvine, Calif.
The Cowboys fell to the Anteater men 110-131, losing their second dual in as many days. The Cowboys (4-2 overall), won six of 13 events on the day including the 200 medley relay. In that event, Ethan Maclean, Scott Usher, Gene Birks and Grant Kritzinger swam a first place time of 1:34.65. Both Usher and Birks were multiple event winners on the day, with Usher winning the 100 and 200 breaststrokes in respective times of 55.44 and 1:56.59. For the second consecutive day, Birks was a two event winner placing first in the 200 freestyle and the 100 butterfly in times of 1:42.15 and 50.25. Ethan Maclean claimed the other first place finish with a time of 52.52 in the 100 backstroke.
On the women's side of the meet, the Anteater women topped the Cowgirls 141-100. The Cowgirls (2-4 overall), won three of 13 events including both boards of diving. Saara Haapanen won the 3-meter board with a score of 273.23, more than 50 points better than the second place finisher. Shea Boyle came away with a first place finish on the 1-meter board with a score of 224.10. The lone swimming event victory came in the final event of the day, the 200 freestyle relay. Katie Haywood, Katie Bigger, Heidi Thorson and Tamara Lehnertz swam to a first place time of 1:39.42.
The Wyoming swimming and diving teams will return to action
next Thursday as they begin the Mountain West Conference
portion of their schedule. Both teams will travel to UNLV
for a 6 PM dual.
