LARAMIE, Wyo. -

The preseason Mountain West Conference favorite Brigham Young University Cougars proved their number one ranking by defeating the University of Wyoming swimming and diving teams in Provo, Saturday afternoon. The Cowboys fell to the Cougars 142-63 and the Cowgirls lost 152-88.

The Cowboys managed to win just two events on the day including the 500 freestyle and the 100 breaststroke. Jerram Chudleigh ran away with the title in the 500 freestyle where he swam a time of 4:30.77. This time was nearly nine seconds faster than BYU's second place time of 4:39.50. This time also preliminarily qualifies Chudleigh for the NCAA Championships. Scott Usher came away with the Cowboys second event victory in the 100 breaststroke. He swam a time of 57.20.

"It was a tough day for our guys," said UW head coach Tom Johnson. "We did pretty well in the events we thought we would but struggled in a few others. Jerram Chudleigh swam a tough 500 free and preliminarily qualified himself for the NCAA's with a "B" cut."

The Cowgirls won just 2 events on the day, both of which were won by senior captains. Jody Riskowski won the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.99. She won the event despite swimming a sore back which she injured Friday night against Utah. Allison Schmid came away with the title in the 200 freestyle. She swam to a time of 1:57.02.

One highlight from the dual was the way freshman Kenzie Kotby swam. She achieved three lifetime best times in the 50 freestyle, the 100 freestyle and again with her split in the 200 freestyle relay. She swam a time of 25.86 in the 50 free, 57.09 in the 100 free and then a split of 25.20 in the 200 freestyle relay.

"On the women's side of the meet I have to give Kenzie Kotby a ton of credit, she achieved 3 lifetime best times and is really improving," said Johnson. "Allison Schmid swam a great 200 freestyle and Jody Riskowski fought through a sore back and swam really hard.

"All together we had a really tough day. I feel bad for our kids because they have been working extremely hard and this is a very tough loss for us."

The University of Wyoming Swimming and Diving team will return to action next weekend as they will travel to Fort Collins for a Friday evening dual with the Rams, the dual is scheduled to begin at 5 pm. They will also swim Air Force on Saturday at noon and the divers will compete in the Air Force Diving Invite, which is scheduled to last all day.
