The University of Wyoming swimming and diving teams opened the weekend at the UNLV Fall Invite in Buchanan Natatorium on Thursday evening. The Cowboys finished the opening day of the invite with three top-five finishes in the highly competitive field.

"I was proud of the effort our guys gave today," UW assistant coach Manny Noguchi said. "We improved our times from earlier in the day and I think we will get better as the weekend goes on."

Junior Adam Kalms was Wyoming's top individual finisher, as he finished fifth in the 200 individual medley with a time of 1:48.65. He turned in a time of 1:48.14 in the preliminaries earlier in the day. Sophomore Ryan Nelson also earned a fifth-place finish in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:28.21. Senior Ethan Griffel finished 10th in the event finishing at 4:29.71. Junior Ryan O'Leary competed in the 50 freestyle with a time of 20.75 finishing in 12th place.

"Ryan and Ethan did a great job in the 500 freestyle and our guys in the 200 individual medley did a great job improving," Noguchi said.

The Cowboys' relay teams were also in action at the UNLV Fall Invite. In the 400 medley relay quartet  of Kalms, sophomore Kyle Scalise, sophomore George Eglesfield and Griffel finished third with a time of 3:17.90.  The 200 freestyle relay team of Kalms, Griffel, senior Jayce Calhoon and Scalise finished seventh at 1:22.43.

"Everybody did what they were suppose to do today in the relays against some top teams," Noguchi said.

A full slate of action awaits Wyoming on Friday. The divers open the Arizona Diving Invite and the Cowgirls take on New Mexico, Nevada and Grand Canyon in duals in Albuquerque, N.M. A few selected Cowboys will also continue at the UNLV Fall Invite.
