University of Wyoming senior Morgan Hartigan earned a bid to the NCAA Women’s Swimming and Diving Championship announced late Wednesday evening by the NCAA. The championships will be held March 20-22 at the Minnesota Aquatic Center in Minneapolis. Hartigan will be making her first NCAA Championship appearance and the first by a Cowgirl since Kelsey Conci in 2012.

“What she has done over the last couple of years is very well deserve and long overdue,” Wyoming head coach Tom Johnson said. “We just need to keep her sharp over the next couple of weeks.”

Hartigan earned bids in the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke. She was also invited to race in the 200 individual medley, due to qualifying in the other two events. She will become the first Cowgirl ever to swim in an individual medley race at the NCAA Championships.

The Cheyenne, Wyo., native had an excellent regular season that culminated with the Mountain West Championship. She earned All-MW honors in four events; 200 individual medley, 100 backstroke, 100 freestyle and 400 medley relay. Hartigan broke the school record in the 100 freestyle in her final swim of the championships at 48.77. She also set a school record at the championships in the 200 individual medley with a time of 1:58.37. Her qualifying time of 52.98 in the 100 backstroke came in November in duals at New Mexico.

A total of 322 participants (281 swimmers and 41 divers) will compete in the championships. Swimmers qualified for the championships by meeting the established minimum time for the events in which they entered.

Sophomore Ryan Nelson will compete at the American Short Course Championships, a three-day meet featuring collegiate, professional and club swimmers this weekend in Austin, Texas. The meet serves as a final opportunity for men's collegiate swimmers to qualify for the NCAA Championships set for March 27-29 in Austin.
