Wyoming Men's Swimming And Diving Set To Join Western Athletic Conference
May 16, 2013
DENVER, Colo. - After two very successful seasons in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, the Wyoming men's swimming and diving team will be making a conference move once again by joining the Western Athletic Conference, which announced Thursday it is adding men's swimming and diving beginning in the 2013-14 season. Wyoming will begin competition in the WAC for the upcoming 2013-14 season.
"We are excited to have the men back in the WAC in swimming and diving," Wyoming head coach Tom Johnson said. "We are very grateful that the WAC is sponsoring men's swimming and diving again and we are happy they reached out to us."
The 2013-14 WAC membership in men's swimming and diving will feature CSU Bakersfield, Grand Canyon, Seattle, Air Force, UNLV, North Dakota and Wyoming giving it seven teams for the season. This will be the second time that the WAC has sponsored men's swimming and diving. It was part of the conference from its inaugural 1962-63 season through the 1999-2000 season. Wyoming, Air Force and UNLV are all three former members of the conference.
The 2014 WAC Championship meet will be on Feb. 26-March 1 at the Palo Alto College Aquatic Center in San Antonio, Texas.
"One major decision behind us making this move is the conference championship facility," Johnson said. "For the two years we were in the MPSF we thought we were going to be in Belmont Plaza (competition pool) in Los Angeles, Calif., but both years we ended up swimming at East Los Angeles Community College. I do need to thank them for providing us a place to be, but I just didn't feel like it was a facility that was conducive for the best situation for our athletes. The WAC hosts its championship at the same place as the Mountain West and on different weekends, which makes it possible for all of our coaches to go to both the men's and women's meets."
