Conci Finishes 100-Backstroke Semi-Finals In 11th Place At U.S. Olympic Trials
June 26, 2012
OMAHA, Neb. -
University of Wyoming Cowgirl swimmer Kelsey Conci finished 11th in the 100-meter backstroke semi-finals at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials in Omaha, Neb., on Tuesday.
Less than 12 hours after swimming the 14th-fastest time (1:01.65) in the 100 backstroke preliminaries, Conci returned to the pool for the semi-finals and finished 11th with a time of 1:01.16. Conci, who was three places from reaching the final, is the first UW swimmer to move past the preliminaries since Scott Usher made the U.S. Olympic Team in 2004.
"I could not be more proud of Kelsey," UW head swimming coach Tom Johnson said. "She had a great swim tonight and missed the finals by less than a half a second. She was a little slower coming off the wall in the beginning, but I think that it helped her really turn it on coming down the stretch. Down the stretch she really was coming strong and was just touched out."
Conci and three other UW swimmers have events remaining at the trials. Brandon Fischer will be the next UW swimmer in the pool on Thursday, June 28 in the 200 breaststroke preliminaries. He enters the event with the 36th-fastest time in the meet of 2:16.53.
On Friday, June 29 junior Jayce Calhoon will race in the 200 backstroke where he is seeded 78th with a time of 2:04.35.
Also on Friday is the 200 individual medley with Fischer and sophomore Jordan Turner racing in the event. Fischer enters with the 123rd-ranked time of 2:06.47, while Turner enters with a top-100 time in 97th of 2:06.02.
Conci will close the racing for UW at the trials on Sunday, July 1 with the 50 freestyle. She has the 150th-seeded time of 26.37 in the 50 free preliminaries.
