Cowgirl Swimming Selected To Finish Fourth In MW Preseason Poll

Sept. 18, 2012

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Wyoming Cowgirl swimming and diving team was selected to finish fourth in the 2012-13 Mountain West preseason coach's poll, the conference office announced Tuesday.

"I feel like the coaches voted just like our finishes from a season ago," Wyoming head coach Tom Johnson said. "It hurts to lose some of our seniors from last season, most notably Kelsey Conci, but we have done a tremendous job of recruiting to try and replace them. We have 41 women in this program who are ready to go out and compete for a conference championship. I think in the last 10 years, with the exception of last season, we have finished higher than we were picked preseason so that is always good motivation. We are excited for the season and ready to get in the pool and start competing."

The Cowgirls return seven All-MW performers from the 2011-12 squad that placed fourth at the conference championships. The fourth-place finish at last season's conference championship was their sixth-consecutive season placing fourth or better. They also return MW 200-yard backstroke champion sophomore Jordan Denny and two members of the conference champion 200 medley relay team in Mackenzie Norlin and Morgan Hartigan. Cowgirl swimming is coming off a 6-3 overall record in 2011-12 along with a 3-1 record in MW action.

San Diego State was selected as the favorite to win the MW Women's swimming and diving title with 60 total points and four first-place votes. Defending champion Boise State was selected to finish second, one point behind SDSU with 59 total points and five first-place votes. Selected third was UNLV with 48 points, one point ahead of Wyoming which was selected fourth with 47 points. Colorado State (34 points) and New Mexico (26 points) claimed fifth and sixth place, respectively. Conference newcomers Fresno State (22 points) and Nevada (17 points) took seventh and eighth places, respectively, while Air Force (11 points) rounded out the nine teams.
