2012-13 Indoor: Competed at the MW Championships, placing 18th in the 3,000-meter run with a career-best 8:39.07 and 13th in the 5,000-meter in 15:06.56 ... ran a career-best 14:48.49 in the 5,000-meter at the Husky Classic, UW's No. 9 all-time best mark ... achieved a career-best 4:26.91 in the mile at the Air Force Invite for 10th place and finished eighth in the 3,000-meter in 8:46.14 at the meet ... came in ninth place in the 3,000-meter in 8:42.21 at the Husker Invite. Competed at the MW Championships in the 10,000-meter run, placing 13th in 32:47.51 ... finished 27th in the 10,000-meter at the prestigious Mt. SAC Relays in 31:12.77 ... came in sixth place in the 3,000-meter run in 8:45.17 at the Nebraska Quad ... opened the outdoor season with a third-place finish in the 5,000-meter in 14:58.92 at the Fum McGraw Quad ... named a 2012-13 MW Scholar Athlete.
Competing during the outdoor season, Nick made the most of it by becoming the 10,000-meter MW champion in a personal-best 29:26.85 ... also competed in the 5,000-meter at the league meet and placed fifth overall ... finished third in the 800-meter run at the Snowball Meet and placed first in the 3,000-meter run at the Front Range Classic.
Ekel was one of the most consistent performers for the Cowboy cross country corps this season, finishing in the top 15 in three races ... best performance of the season came at the MW Championships, in which Ekel finished seventh and earned All-MW First Team honors ... also shined at the Woody Greeno Invite, where he finished 13th in a loaded field ... named a Scholar-Athlete and an Academic All-Conference team member.
While running at Saginaw Valley, received several honors for his running achievements in 2009-10 ... named First Team All-Conference in 2009, and was named the team's most dedicated runner in 2009 and its most outstanding freshman in 2008 ... came in 48th at the NCAA DII cross country championships.
Enjoyed a decorated prep career in track and cross country ... named team captain his senior year and received all-state and all-conference nods in the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs ... named most improved in 2005 and most inspirational in 2006 and 2007.
