Cowboys Finish Fifth and Cowgirls Fourth
Smith has made a name for herself and emerged as one of the best hurdlers in the nation. She won the 60 meter hurdles at the 2004 MWC Indoor Championships and set a new Cowgirl record earlier in the year in the same event with a time of 8.33. Earned All-American honors by placing sixth in the 400 meters at the 2004 NCAA Indoor Championships with a new Cowgirl and MWC record time of 51.79. Smith ran on the 4x400 meter relay team who punched their first ever ticket to the 2004 Indoor Championships and set a new UW record of 3:31.87. She also had an outstanding outdoor season in 2004. Earned All-American honors for the second consecutive season by placing third in the 400 meter hurdles at NCAA Nationals. Her time of 55.54 set a new UW and MWC record in the event. Smith would go on and beat this personal best at the U.S. Olympic Trials with a time of 54.42 to place sixth in the event. She becomes the first Cowgirl in UW history to earn multiple All-American honors in the hurdle events. Smith helped lead both relay teams to appearances at the NCAA Championships, the first time in UW history. Both teams went on to set UW records of 44.63 and 3:31.83. The 4x400 time was also a MWC record. She also led both relay teams at the MWC Championships to a first and second place finish. Smith was also selected as the All-American Strength and Conditioning Athlete of the Year by the National Strength and Coditioning Association in the 2004. Smith ended her sophomore year with a brilliant run at the NCAA Championships. HEr quest ended with a seventh place finish at the 2003 NCAA Outdoor Championships. At the NCAA's she broke her own UW record in the event twice. Smith went on to place ieghth at the USA Track and Field Championships. She is the first Cowgirl hurdler in program history to earn All-American honors.Named the 2002 MWC Freshman of the Year for both the indoor and outdoor track and field seasons.
