LARAMIE, Wyo. -

The University of Wyoming track and field teams finished the first day at the Air Force Invitational Friday in Colorado Springs, Colo. advancing 11 athletes into finals competition. Five Cowboys and six Cowgirls will be competing in the finals of their respective events. The meet is full of talent from across the region as athletes from Colorado State, Colorado, New Mexico, Alabama, along with the Air Force Academy are participating.

The Cowboys will have three competitors in the weight throw finals; senior Dan Williams' mark of 61' 4 1/4" was the fourth best on the day, senior John Griffith finished with the fifth best throw with a 60' 7 3/4" toss and freshman Zack Schaefer advanced to the finals with his throw of 60' 7 3/4". In the 800 meters Cowboys Jeremiah Johnson and Jeremiah Thompson finished in the top eight with times of 1:55.62 and 1:56.46 to earn spots in tomorrow's championship final.

UW will have six Cowgirls in four different events competing in championship finals. Sophomore Shauna Smith had the best time of the day in the 400 meter dash with a time of 56.46 to advance. Sophomore Ingvild Carstens will also compete in the 400 meter final due to her preliminary time of 58.96. Junior Kima Wells' 24.93 in the 200 meter dash was fourth best on the day and earned her a spot in tomorrow's final. In the 800 meters sophomore Tanice Barnett and Lee Ann Forbes both advanced with times of 2:20.44 and 2:25.12. Sophomore Courtney Schlegel will be competing in finals of the triple jump with her preliminary leap of 36' 7 1/2".

Not all events were scheduled for preliminary competition on Friday, preliminary competition along with championships will take place on Saturday starting at 10 a.m.
