Both the Wyoming Cowboy and Cowgirl track and field teams took fourth place on Saturday, Feb. 2nd at the Air Force Invitational held in the Cadet Field House.

UW senior Kate Burton lead the way for the Cowgirls as she won the 20lb weight throw with a NCAA Provisional toss of 63' 6 1/4", her personal best and good for 11th in the nation.

For the men, the jumpers led the way, as sophomore John Alderson took first place in the triple jump with a personal best leap of 50' 1/2" and freshman Jeremiah James took third in the long jump with a personal best 24' 2 1/2".

Along with Burton, the Cowgirls took fourth in a field of 13 teams. Junior thrower, Courtney Gougler took third place in the 20lb weight throw with a personal best 58' 7 1/4". She was followed by a very solid performance from senior Shaylee Babbitt who also finished with a personal best time in the 60 meter dash, 7.86 and good for seventh place. Fellow senior Sharon Larrier placed second in the 400 meter finals with a time of 55.53. Senior Amanda Yentes took second in the 800 meter race with a personal best time of 2:15.82.

A couple more personal bests were set Saturday, including sophomore Jennifer Schmitz in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.72 which was good for fourth place. Freshman Britney Jackson from Casper, Wyo. took second in the high jump with a personal best 5' 5". Sophomore Emily Higgins performed well in her first meet of the year by taking second place in the one mile run with a time of 5:06.65.

 

 

For the Cowboys, they took fourth out of 11 teams and were led by Alderson who won the triple jump and took sixth in the long jump with a leap of 23' 2". James placed third in both the long jump and triple jump where he soared for 48'. Senior Vashone West placed fourth in the 200 meter race while also taking seventh in the 60 meter race with a season best time of 6.93. Fellow senior Michael Huntington took fifth in the 3,000 meter race with a time of 8:55.94 in his first meet of the year. Sophomore Tony Michaelis placed fifth in the high jump with a personal best jump of 6' 4 3/4".

"Today we did some very good things, individually and as a team," said UW head coach Don Yentes. "I am very pleased with our team as they are starting to come together, I look forward to next weekend in Nebraska."

The next meet for the Cowboys and Cowgirls will be on Saturday, Feb. 9th in Lincoln, Neb., for the Adidas Invitational.
