Sophomore Emily Higgins wrote her name in the record books for the second straight week with a new UW top time of 9:44.54 in the 3000 meter race, as the University of Wyoming track and field team competed in the Husky Classic in Seattle, Wash., hosted by the University of Washington.

Junior Mark Korir was .05 of a second away from tying his own record of 13:57.60 in the 5000 meter race as he placed second at the Husky Classic. However, all was not lost as he qualified provisionally for the NCAA Championships. Korir was followed by freshmen Greg Miller and Taylor Kelting, as they both set personal best times of 14:48.71 and 14:55.65 respectively in the 5000 meter race.

"The throwers competed very well today," said UW head coach Don Yentes. Junior Jake Shanklin took third in the 35lb weight throw with a toss of 68' 1/4". Shanklin was trailed by junior Sam Lambert in seventh with a throw of 62' 10", and freshman Alan John in ninth with a heave of 59' 7 1/2". For the Cowgirls, senior Kate Burton also placed third in the 20lb weight throw with a toss of 60' 9 1/2", while junior Courtney Gougler took fourth with a throw of 58' 6 3/4".

The sprinters were led by senior Sharon Larrier as she ran her season best 54.84 and a second place finish in the 400 meter race. For the Cowboys, junior Geoffrey Standen has started to hit his stride as he ran a season best time of 1:54.68 in the 800 meter race.

 

 

"It is good to see some of our veterans start to come around as we start to gear up for the Mountain West Conference Championships," said Yentes.

The track team returns to Laramie next Friday Feb. 22nd to host the Shine Invitational, held in the War Memorial Fieldhouse.

"The Shine Invitational is a great chance for our athletes to tune up for the MWC Championships held in Colorado Springs, Colo. Feb. 28th-March 1st," said Yentes.
