UW Indoor Track Ends Regular Season On High Note
Feb. 18, 2011
LARAMIE, Wyo. -
The University of Wyoming track and field teams ended the indoor track regular season in style Friday in the War Memorial Fieldhouse track.
At the Robert Shine Invitational, the Cowboys and Cowgirls welcomed competitors from the Mountain West Conference in Air Force and Colorado State. Wyoming won 16 events on the day, and times improved across the board for most athletes.
The winners for the UW women included: Erin Urbanoski in the long jump (18 feet, 3 ¾ inches), Ashley Hutchinson in the weight throw (61-0 ¼) and in the shot put (48-5 ¼), Olivia Heaston in the 200-meter dash (26.04 seconds) and Erin Kirby in the 55-meter hurdles (8.11).
The men's team was boosted by the performances of Travis Gunderson in the 55-meter dash (6.42), Jeremiah James in the triple jump (51-9), Mark Flegel in the 55-meter hurdles (7.70), Joe Plante in the weight throw (63-6) and Lenyn Leonce in the long jump (23-10 ¾). Joe Riccio also added a win in the last event of the night, the shot put, with a mark of 55-9 ¼.
"We had some very nice performances in the field from several people like Ashley (Hutchinson) and Joe (Plante) and Jeremiah James improved his national stock in the triple jump," Wyoming coach Don Yentes said. "The facility is very good for field events. With some of the marks we achieved, that's as good as any meet you want to go to."
The meet served as a preparatory event for the Mountain West Conference Indoor Championships, which will begin Thursday in Albuquerque, N.M.
And although Wyoming is battling injuries at several spots, the performances in the Shine Invitational served as a boost to the team's morale, Yentes said.
"We got some work in," Yentes said. "We'll head down to conference with our Red Cross banner, and we'll go down swinging."
