LARAMIE, Wyo. -
Senior Mason Finley has thrown the shot put in War Memorial Fieldhouse twice this season and twice he has broken both the facility and school record. The senior thrower did it again for the University of Wyoming track and field teams with a toss of 66-3 1/4 to win the event during Friday's Rocky Mountain Classic on the Hager-LeBar Indoor Track. The performance paced the Cowboys to victories in eight of 10 events, while the Cowgirls were winners in seven of 10.
"We knew going in that our field events would be the highlight of this meet and we had big performances by a couple kids," UW head coach Bryan Berryhill said. "I really liked the energy of our team today. A small meet like this the week before the conference meet can sometimes be flat, but we brought a lot of energy today and that will set them up well heading into next weekend."
Finley's mark broke his previous school and facility record of 66-0 1/4, which he set during UW's Power Meet in December, and keeps him fourth in the NCAA in the event. His female counterpart Shreese Daniels excelled in the women's weight throw as well. The junior won at 67-3 1/4 to improve her personal best by nearly 2 feet. The mark keeps her second all-time in Cowgirl history and moves her up to 21st in the NCAA. Sophomore Scott Carter was also impressive in the triple jump, as he unleashed a leap of 51-3 3/4 to win and break his old personal best by more than 2 feet. The mark ranks fifth in Wyoming history and is 22nd in the nation.
"Mason and Shreese have both been working on some technical things in practice and they hit it today," Berryhill said. "Scott has been a little dinged up, but we've seen that in practice and knew he had it in him. Today he just went for broke each time down the runway and was rewarded with a great mark."
Other victories for the Cowboys included sophomore Harrison Einspahr in the 55 meters at 6.43 and junior Colin Herold in the 55-meter hurdles at 7.51. Junior Jason Roascio won the 300 meters in 36.42 and freshman Garrett Westlake, running unattached, won the mile in 4:22. Junior Kyle Sullivan won the high jump at 6-2 3/4 and sophomore Tyler Anderson was victorious in the weight throw at 63-2 1/4.
The Cowgirls took home titles in the 55 meters and 55-meter hurdles as well, thanks to a 6.91 from sophomore Kereston Thomas and 7.89 from senior Jenna Mann, respectively. Senior Natalie Hurst won the 300 meters at 41.75 and sophomore Catherine Cloetta crossed the line in the mile in 5:16 to win. Sophomore Sabina Sandberg tied a season-best at 5-5 to win the high jump and Mann won the long jump at 18-3 1/4.
Wyoming continues its season at the 2014 Mountain West Indoor Championships on Thursday through Saturday at Cadet Field House on the Air Force Academy.
