Hall, Finley Lead UW to Solid Finishes at MW Indoors
Feb. 23, 2013
BOISE, Idaho - Junior Mason Finley and senior Katy Hall led the Wyoming men's and women's track and field teams to respective fifth- and eighth-place marks to conclude the 2013 MW Indoor Championships Saturday in Boise, Idaho.
The men finished with 72 points for fifth place, while the Cowgirls ended the meet with 53 points for eighth place. New Mexico won the meet on the men's side with 185 points, while San Diego State came in first on the women's side with 123 points.
"I'm happy with how our teams competed," said Wyoming coach Bryan Berryhill. "Both our men and women doubled their scores at this meet compared to last year and we went from one All-Mountain West performer to eight. We're glad to see progress is being made on our end, but it was also good for us to see what other teams are doing. It's clear we need a bit more depth in years to come to get some more scorers, but we're pleased with what we're doing to this point."
Finley came in first place in the men's shot put to provide 10 team points, throwing a 65'-1.50," over five feet farther than the second-place finisher. The mark was close to his season-best of 65'-9.75," the nation's second-best distance for the event. He was also given the meet's Men's Outstanding Performer as he placed second in the weight throw on Friday.
"Mason has been consistent at all the meets," said UW associate head coach Paul Barrett. "If he continues to work hard to prepare for NCAAs in two weeks, he is going to represent the program very well against the nation's best throwers."
Hall led the women's team as she placed second in the 60-meter hurdles for eight team points with a personal-best 8.51, beating her previous best of 8.52 from Friday. Junior Jenna Mann came in fifth place in the event with an 8.59 to give the team four points.
Junior Sam Kee performed well in the women's 400-meter dash as she placed sixth in 56.51 to provide three points. Competing alongside Diana Long, Taylor Gardner, and McKenzie Brogan in the 4x400-meter relay, Kee helped the team to another four points as the squad finished fifth in 3:45.53, UW's fifth-best time in school history.
Junior Garrett Zans placed third in the men's 3,000-meter run in 8:21.15 to give the Cowboys six points, while senior Brandon Douglass had a nice outing in the 60-meter hurdles with a third-place time of 7.96 for six team points. Freshman Harrison Einspahr led the men in the 60-meter dash with a fifth-place mark of seven seconds for four team points.
The NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships take place March 8-9 hosted by the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, Ark.
