The first day of spring was Thursday and the Wyoming track and field team celebrated by opening the 2008 outdoor season today in Boulder, Colo. Both the Cowgirls and Cowboys had a solid day of competition at the Potts Invitational on the University of Colorado campus.

The Cowgirls came away with two first place finishes on the day, including a win in the 4x100 meter relay. In that relay, Allie Childers, Andrea Frary, Maricel DaCosta and Jenelle Garber ran a first place time of 48.27. Ashley Knight had the only individual first place finish as she won the triple jump with a leap of 35'3".

Four other Cowgirls were runner-ups in their individual events. Shaylee Babbitt did so in the 100-meter hurdles (14.03), Lindsey Fuller placed second in the triple jump (34' 4 1/4"), Courtney Gougler placed second in the discus (166' 0") and Kate Burton did so in the hammer throw (181' 8"). Both Burton and Gougler's performances were regional qualifying efforts.

The Cowboys' day was highlighted by three second place finishes. In the 100-meter dash, Vashone West placed second with a time of 10.73. Tony Michaelis placed second in the high jump with a height of 6' 3/4". Finally, Travis Corrow placed second in the long jump with a leap of 21' 6 1/4".

"This meet was a just a nice tune up for the outdoor season. It was good to be able to be outside and get used to competing in that environment again," said UW head coach Don Yentes. "We had two really nice women's performances. Kate Burton and Courtney Gougler each qualified for the regional meet which was great to see."

The UW track and field team will continue the outdoor season next weekend. The team will split up to travel to the Upton Invite in Fort Collins, Colo. and the Victor Lopez Invite in Houston, Texas.
