BOULDER, Colo., (April 10, 2010) - The University of Wyoming track and field teams decided to take the entire team to the Colorado Invitational in Boulder, Colo., on Saturday instead of splitting their squad.

The Cowboys and Cowgirls had a very good day with a total of 31 top-five performances. The Cowgirls had 16 and the Cowboys had 15.

"We had some kids step up and do some good things out here," said head coach Don Yentes. "Overall it was a good day; I am pleased with the way that our kids competed today."

On the men's side, the hammer throw was performed on Friday and it had freshman Mark Sparks leading the way. He finished third in the event but was the top collegiate at the meet with his toss of 177' 7". He was followed closely by senior Sam Lambert and sophomore Joe Plante. Lambert finished fourth overall but the second collegiate while Plante finished fifth, third collegiate. Plante and Sparks would then compete in the discus on Saturday and once again finished second and third, but the first and second collegiate.

"It was a great weekend for Mark, he had a huge throw in the hammer and backed it up with another solid performance in not so great of conditions," said assistant coach Paul Barrett.

Freshman Brandon Douglass ran the seventh fastest time in the 110-meter hurdles and senior Kekoa Chavez ran the tenth best 400-meter dash. Douglass' time of 14.81 was good for third in the field while Chavez's time of 48.53 was good for first.

As for the Cowgirls, junior Afiya Walker finished second in the 200-meter dash with her time of 24.39, which is good for eighth all-time. Taylor Gardner continued her successful freshman campaign finishing first in the 400-meter dash with a time of 57.18 while senior Erica Anderson followed suite with her second-place finish.

Senior Johnna Jeffries in the high jump came so close to clearing the bar at 5' 9" but had her season best in the event at 5'8". Junior distance runner, Alysha Davis had one of her top times in the 3,000-meter run, finishing third with a time of 10:25.18.

"We had some nice performances today, Johnna and Alysha both stepped up and competed very well for us," said Yentes.

The Cowboys and Cowgirls will split their squads next weekend to compete in both the CSU-Pueblo Invite and the TCU invite in Fort Worth, Tex., April 15-17.
