Junior Kyle Sullivan opened this week's Mt. SAC Relays for the University of Wyoming men's and women's track and field teams with a strong showing during Wednesday's five events of the decathlon. Sullivan sits third in the 18-person field with a total of 3,677 points thanks to four personal bests during the day.

"The magic number in the decathlon is 7,000 points," UW assistant coach Shaun Meinecke said. "That is our ultimate goal, so for Kyle to be almost 100 points above his previous best after the first day definitely gives him the motivation for that second day to keep pushing for that magic number."

The Powell, Wyo.-native's 3,677 points through the first five events are 67 more than his 3,610 at UC Riverside earlier this season. He went on to total a personal-best 6,772 points at that meet to rank seventh all-time in Cowboy history in the event. Just like at UCR, Sullivan set four new personal bests on Wednesday. He started with an 11.28 in the 100 meters, followed with 21-10 in the long jump and notched 39-1 1/4 in the shot put for his only mark of the day that wasn't the best of his career. He bounced back by clearing 6-4 in the high jump and closed with a 50.24 in the 400 meters.

"As far as improvements go from Riverside to here, it's almost exactly how you want to draw it up," Meinecke said. "For a guy that has been training consistently in all the events to score more in almost all the events, that is when you are maturing as a multi-eventer. When you consistently put together your best all-around performance across the board."

Senior Jenna Mann ran the first event of the heptathlon on Wednesday, but withdrew from the rest of the competition due to an injury.

Sullivan concludes the other five events of the decathlon beginning at noon MT tomorrow, while the rest of the UW track and field teams begin competition at the Mt. SAC Relays on Friday.
