Wyoming Track and Field Competes in Fort Worth

FORT WORTH, Tex., (April 17, 2010) - The University of Wyoming track and field teams competed in Fort Worth, Tex., on Saturday at the TCU Invitational at the rainy Lowdon Track Complex.
The Cowgirls came away with five first place finishes and on the whole competed very well. The winners were: junior Afiya Walker in the 400-meter dash (54.07), freshman Brooke Hughes in the 1,500-meter run (4:49.40), freshman Taylor Gardner in the 400-meter hurdles (1:01.09) and junior Francis Gipson in the 5,000-meter run (18:33.17). Finally, the women's 4x400-meter relay team took the title with their time of 3:50.38. Senior Erica Anderson, Gardner, freshman Diana Long and Walker combined to win the event.
"The rain really hampered our performances but I am very proud of how we competed today," said head coach Don Yentes. "We had a few good performances and in some events the kids are really getting better and better each day."
On the men's side, sophomore Taylor Kelting took the title in the 5,000-meter run with his time of 14:53.66, freshman Tyler Skinner won the high jump with a leap of 6' 6.75". Junior Jeremiah James once again came out on top of the long jump and the triple jump with distances of 22' 10.75" and 50' 6.25" respectively.
"We will keep working and improving," said Yentes. "We are excited to be able to host the Air Force Academy in our dual at home, it should be a good meet."
Up next for the Cowboys and Cowgirls will be their host meet on Saturday, April 24, at the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex.
