Mann Opens Strong at Cal Invite Heptathlon

AZUSA, Calif. - Wyoming junior Jenna Mann opened the Mt. SAC Relays with strong performances in the first four heptathlon events Wednesday at the California Invitational Combined Events in Azusa, Calif.
The Bayview Crescent, Saskatchewan, native finished the day in 10th place with 3,068 points, which included a first-place finish in her section of the 200-meter dash and second place in her section of the 100-meter hurdles. She ran the 100-meter hurdles in 14.12 for 961 points, while her 200-meter time of 25.50, a career best, went for 841 points.
In the high jump, Mann tied a personal best with a 5'-2.25" leap, good for eighth place in her flight and 712 points toward her total. For the shot put event, she earned a career-best 34'-0.50," breaking her former best of 33'-5.75." The mark finished ninth in the first flight and 554 points to her tally.
Illinois' Marissa Golliday leads the field of 30 with 3,426 points after the first day. Nevada's April Pate is in second with 3,346 with Utah State's Chari Hawkins close behind with 3,289.
Mann will compete in the final three events Thursday to finish the heptathlon. The long jump is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. MT, the javelin throw at 2 p.m. and the 800-meter run at 4 p.m. Also competing Thursday will be Abi Bever in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, while Nick Ekel and Holly Page will compete in the 10,000-meter run late in the evening.
UW athletes continue the Mt. SAC Relays on Friday beginning at 11 a.m. MT with Joe Plante and Mark Sparks in the hammer throw. Page will conclude Friday's events for Wyoming by running the 5,000-meter late in the evening.
Following the Mt. SAC Relays, Wyoming will head to Cerritos College in Norwalk, Calif., on Saturday for the Beach Invitational hosted by Long Beach State.
