FORT WORTH, Texas -

Day Two of the Mountain West Conference Championships is in the books with the conclusion of the decathlon and heptathlon at the Lowdon Track Complex in Fort Worth, Texas.

Wyoming sophomore Jay Petsch, who was in fifth place after day one, slipped to seventh at the conclusion of day two. Petsch was ranked seventh in the conference coming into this weekend, set a new personal best with a total of 6,092 points. He also set a new personal best in the pole vault with a height of 12' 3". Justin Palmer of BYU took the title with a total of 7,054 points.

"Jay (Petsch) gained some much needed experience this weekend that will help with his future decathlons," said UW assistant coach Quincy Howe. "All in all, I was very impressed with the way he performed and competed today."

The only other event that took place was the men's hammer throw where Cowboy freshman Alan John took to the field. John is a regional qualifier and had the fourth best throw in the conference this season of 190'. He finished the day just where he began, in fourth place with a toss of 177' 6".

"A really good performance for a freshman," said UW assistant coach Paul Barrett. "The distances were down as a whole today, but that is pretty common for conference."

Day three will bring finals for many field events and mostly qualifying for the running events. A total list of events and real time results are available at www.themwc.com.
