UW's Burton Qualifies for Nationals
May 27, 2006
Austin, Tex. - Cowgirl junior Kate Burton qualified for nationals at the 2006 NCAA Midwest Regional in Austin, Texas, on Saturday.
Her throw of 194' 11" was good enough for fourth place in the hammer throw earning her an automatic ticket to NCAA Nationals in Sacramento, Calif., on June 7-10.
Other Wyoming athletes competing on Saturday were sophomore Philemon Tanui and junior Blake Jackson. Tanui managed to finish eighth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:12.86. With his finish, Tanui gave himself a shot of getting an at-large nomination to nationals which will be announced on Tuesday. Unfortunately, Jackson did not have his best competition as he finished 11th in the triple jump with a distance of 47' 10-1/2".
At the end of the meet, Burton was the lone Wyoming athlete to automatically qualify for nationals. However, junior Jeremiah Johnson, and sophomores Mark Korir and Tanui, all have chances to earn at-large nominations next week.
"That is one thing that is tough about our sport," said Yentes. "We will not know for sure about those three guys until Tuesday."
