LARAMIE, Wyo. - Competing for their native countries for a chance to qualify for the IAAF World Championships in August, Wyoming track and field athletes Mason Finley and Jenna Mann competed at their respective USA and Canada Track and Field Championships on Friday.

Ranked ninth in the United States for the discus throw, Finley placed 12th in the field with a distance of l88'-10," just a foot off qualifying for the final three throws. Lance Brooks of Nike placed first at 204'-4" to win the event.

"Mason was a bit off today, but was still the third-best NCAA finisher in the field," said UW associate head coach Paul Barrett. "A throw of 204'-4" won the competition, so his personal record of 205 feet shows his abilities when he is on. We will take a little break now and work heavily on his conditioning this summer to prepare for a big senior year next year."

Mann, competing in Moncton, New Brunswick, competed in the first four events of the heptathlon and scored 2,939 points after the first day. The highlight of her day was a third-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles in 14.39 to earn 924 points and followed it up with a fourth-place mark in the 200-meter dash in 26.01 for 796 points. She came in 10th in the high jump at five feet for 644 points and placed 11th in the shot put at 35'-1" for 575 points. Mann will compete in the open 100-meter hurdles qualifying round Saturday at 8 a.m. and resume the heptathlon shortly after at 10:30 a.m.
