LARAMIE, Wyo. -
With the 2007 Indoor season underway the University of Wyoming track and field team already has a member on the national qualifying list in junior Sam Lambert in the weight throw. Lambert qualified provisionally with his throw of 66' 5 3/4" in Saturday's Wyoming Open held in the War Memorial Fieldhouse.
Lambert, a transfer from Iowa Central, threw his personal best in the weight throw and set the mark as the ninth best weight throw in UW history, in only his first meet.
"We had some nice performances today, its always nice to get someone on the national list with Sam Lambert in the weight throw," said UW head coach Don Yentes. "I think we got a lot accomplished today. Mainly we wanted to get the kids used to competing at a division one meet, and understanding what it's going to take to compete at this level."
Freshman Jerry James and sophomore John Alderson finished one and two in the long jump with leaps of 24' 1 1/2" and 23' 9 1/2" respectively. Junior transfer Geoffrey Standen finished the 600 yard race with a time of 1:19.08, along with freshman Noel Limo finishing the 800 meter with a time of 2:01.
"A lot of our new kids rushed themselves, instead of letting it come to them. It will come, it will come in the sprints, the distance, the jumps and the throws. We just have to be patient and continue to train and we will have a good squad by the end of February," said Yentes.
For the women, the best race of the day was in the 200 meter when it came down to seniors Maricel DaCosta and Shaylee Babbitt, DaCosta edged out Babbitt by one hundredth of a second. Babbitt also placed first in the 55 meter hurdles with a time of 8.00, while DaCosta finished first in the 55 meter dash with a time of 7.15. Senior Jennifer Collen finished first in the long jump with a leap of 17' 7 1/4".
"Hopefully the kids can keep up their training over the break, and we can get off to a good start in January," said Yentes.
The Cowboys and Cowgirls will travel to Lincoln, Neb. for the Holiday Inn Classic on January 18th and 19th.
