Wyoming Track and Field Announces Signing of Five Student-Athletes

LARAMIE, Wyo. -
The University of Wyoming track and field team has announced the signing of five student-athletes to National Letters of Intent to compete in the 2008-09 season.
Stephen Michel, a sprinter/jumper from Laramie, Wyo.; and Kenny Smith, a hurdler/jumper from Powell, Wyo., will join the Cowboys this fall. Chantel Bernabo, a sprinter from Wheat Ridge, Colo.; Courtney Barnett, a hurdler/sprinter from Centerville, Ind.; and Larisa Edwards, a hurdler from Ocean View, Hawaii will join the Cowgirls this fall.

In last week's Indoor Wyoming State Championships held at the War Memorial Field House, Michel was the champion of four different events: 55-meter dash, 200-meter dash, long jump, and the triple jump. His time in the 200-meter dash would have been good for 21st in the Mountain West Conference this season, and his long jump of 23' would have been good for fifth best in the MWC this season. Michel joins an already very talented jump crew with freshman Jeremiah James and sophomore John Alderson who both earned All-MWC honors at last weeks MWC Championships.
"Stephen is one of the most talented track athletes to come out of the state of Wyoming in the last few years," said head coach Don Yentes. "We are very excited to have Stephen be apart of our program."
Kenny Smith - Hurdles/Jumps, Powell, Wyo. (Cody HS)
Along with Michel, Smith competed in last week's State Championships where he placed fourth in the long jump and fifth in the 55-meter hurdles.
"Kenny (Smith) fills a big need for us and will continue to add depth in our jumps crew," said Yentes.
Chantel Bernabo - Sprints, Wheat Ridge, Colo. (Wheat Ridge HS)
In last year's Outdoor Colorado State Championships she placed fourth in the 200-meter dash and sixth in the 100-meter dash. Her time of 12.27 would have been good for 20th best in the conference last year.
"Chantel (Bernabo) can do it all, from the 100-meter dash to the 400-meter dash and all in between," said Yentes. "She may be one of the best women sprinters to come to Wyoming, we are very excited to have her here."
Courtney Barnett - Hurdles/Sprints, Centerville, Ind. (Centerville HS)
Barnett, in last year's Indiana State Championships placed 19th in the 300-meter hurdles and really looks forward to coming to Wyoming.
Larisa Edwards - Hurdles, Ocean View, Hawaii (Ka'u HS)
According to star bulletin.com Edwards ran a 9.59 in the 60-meter hurdles last year.
"We are very excited to have both of these excellent hurdlers coming to Wyoming, they will add depth and will help out immediately in our program," said Yentes.
