LARAMIE, Wyo. - Senior sprinter Afiya Walker will represent the University of Wyoming women's track team at the NCAA Indoor Track Championships in College Station, Texas, which begin Friday.

Walker currently is tied for 11th on the nationwide NCAA performance list in the 400-meter dash, with a time of 53.10. A native of Trinidad, her winning time of 53.10 seconds in the MWC Championships also was a Trinidad indoor national record. As a team, UW's women currently are ranked 80th in the nation.

The current leader in the 400-meter event is Jessica Beard of Texas A&M, with a time of 51.68.

This will be Walker's second trip to the NCAA Indoor Championships meet. She finished 18th last year with a time of 55.65 seconds.

"Last year was a new event for her. This year, she's made strides to learn how to run the 400-meter race better," Wyoming coach Don Yentes said. "She's going to do a tremendous job representing herself and her teammates. She's really ready to run and it's going to be pretty exciting."
