April 30, 2004
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - (April 30, 2004) Air Force sophomore Dana Pounds and Wyoming junior Shauna Smith were named Mountain West Conference Women's Outdoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week.
Pounds, a Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., native, won the javelin at the Drake Relays with a school record throw of 172-1.25 (52.46 meters). Her mark currently leads the MWC, ranks fourth in the NCAA and is just two inches shy of the conference record. It was the longest throw in the women's javelin at the Drake Relays since 1986, while her victory was the first for a Falcon since 1976. The mark is also an NCAA and Olympic trial qualifying throw.
Smith took first place and set a new Wyoming school record in the 400
meter hurdles at the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa. Her time of
56.80 broke her previous record in the event of 57.24, which she set
earlier this season. The time is also the fourth best time in the
nation and the second fastest performance in MWC history. The Sheridan, Wyo.,
native also ran the first leg on the Cowgirl 4x400 relay team that captured
first place at the Drake Relays, clocking a time of 3:33.01 in the
prelim's to set a new Wyoming and MWC record.
