Pokes Receive Another Invitation to NCAA West Preliminary Round
May 23, 2011
LARAMIE, Wyo. -
Senior Taylor Kelting became Wyoming's 13th track athlete to qualify for the 2011 NCAA West Preliminary Round in Eugene, Ore., which begins Thursday.
The NCAA Championships began last season with a new qualifying structure which takes the top 48 athletes in each event to the preliminary meet. From there, the top 12 qualifiers from each event will receive an invitation to the NCAA Championships in Des Moines, Iowa, on June 8-11.
When the field seeding was released May 19, Kelting was the 49th-ranked athlete in the region in the 5,000-meter run, less than a second away from qualifying. Because of a scratch in the field over the weekend, he ended up with a spot in the event.
Kelting's invitation means the Cowboy distance squad for UW will be represented by three runners, including junior Greg Miller, who qualified in the 10,000-meter run. Garrett Zans, ranked 27th in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, also will run in Eugene.
Here is a breakdown of the NCAA-bound Wyoming athletes and their rankings within the West Region:
