The United States Track Coaches Association announced Thursday the Mondo Outdoor Regional Athletes and Coaches of the Year for NCAA Division I. Senior Cowgirl Shauna Smith was named the Women's Athlete of the Year for the Midwest Region. This is the first time in UW history a Cowgirl has received this distinction.

During the season, the Sheridan, Wyo. native set a new Midwest Regional and Mountain West Conference record in the 400-meter hurdles with her winning time of 54.37 at the Midwest Regional Meet. The Cowgirl 4x400-meter relay team also finished fifth with a new school record of 3:31.50 helped by Smith. At the Mountain West Conference Championships, Smith also captured the 400-meter hurdles title in 55.31 and helped lead Wyoming to a new MWC Championship meet record in the 4x400 meter relay when they won the event with a time of 3:34.91.

Smith and six other UW athletes will travel to the NCAA Championships next week on June 8-11, in Sacramento, Calif. Smith enters the meet with the fastest time in the nation in the 400-meter hurdles so far this season.

The Athlete and Coach of the Year Awards are sponsored by Mondo, USA, the world's largest supplier of track and field surfaces. Mondo is the official provider of all tracks and equipment for the Track and Field Competitions for the Athens Olympic Games.
