LARAMIE, Wyo. - Wyoming track and field athletes Mason Finley and Jenna Mann and former Cowboy Henry Ferreira will represent their native countries this weekend for a chance to qualify for the IAAF World Championships in Moscow, Russia in August.

Ranked ninth in the United States for the discus throw, Finley will compete at the USA Track and Field Championships in Des Moines, Iowa, on Friday at 5:30 p.m. MT. Finley, a junior, competed for UW during the 2013 indoor season but redshirted the outdoor season, competing unattached at several meets for qualifying marks for this week. He hit a season-best 205-foot (62.48m) discus throw at the Cowpoke Open on May 3, then the fifth-best distance in the country and only three feet, seven inches from current leader Jarred Rome (208'-7").

Finley looks to achieve a top-three finish at the meet to be in the pool of eligible athletes towards qualifying for the IAAF meet. The top three finishers at the USA Championships need to have either an A (216'-6") or B (210'-0") standard qualifying mark to be entered into the World Championships. The athletes who place in the top three at the USA meet will have until July 20th to hit the A or B standards to compete in Moscow.

"Mason has been one of the most consistent of the top eight in the field this spring, so his confidence is very high right now," said UW associate head coach Paul Barrett.

Mann, a Bayview Crescent, Saskatchewan, native, will compete in the heptathlon and 100-meter hurdles at the Canadian Track and Field Championships from June 20-23 in Moncton, New Brunswick. She is seeded seventh in the heptathlon with her 5,200 points from the MW meet and seventh in the 100-meter hurdles with her time of 13.64 from the Jack Christiansen Invite in late April. Mann begins the heptathlon Friday at 8:30 a.m. MT and has the 100-meter hurdles qualifier Saturday at 8 a.m., with the heptathlon resuming at 10:30 a.m. that day.

Ferreira, from St. Paul, Alberta, competes in the javelin throw as an eighth seed Saturday at 6:15 p.m. MT. He earned the seed by way of his Wyoming school record 224-foot (68.27m) javelin throw at the MW Championships in early May in which he won his first individual title. The finals round is slated for Saturday at 6:15 p.m.

The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World Championships take place Aug. 10-18 in Moscow, Russia.
