Shauna Smith Advances at World Championships

Former University of Wyoming standout Shauna Smith advanced to the semifinals of the 400-meter hurdles at the International Association of Athletics Federations World Championships in Helsinki, Finland, on Wednesday.
Smith, a native of Sheridan, Wyo., competed in the last of the five first round heats. She needed to finish in the top four of her heat or have one of the fourth fastest times of the nonqualifiers to advance. The 2005 400-meter hurdle NCAA National Champion finished fourth in her heat with a time of 58.33 in wet conditions, nearly four seconds off her personal best time of 54.32.
Smith will continue competition on Thursday when she runs in the semifinals at 1:50 p.m. (MST).
