COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - After a strong summer of training, the 2012 cross country slate begins this weekend as both the Cowboys and Cowgirls compete at the Rust Buster Saturday morning in Colorado Springs, Colo.

The men's 6k race will begin at 8:45 a.m., while the women will run a 4k race at 9:30 a.m. at Monument Valley Park. The event is hosted by the University of Colorado Colorado Springs.

"This meet is to see how we have developed so far and to just go out and compete," said Wyoming coach Bryan Berryhill. "As a coach, I'll be able to see how they race in competition and do a first-time evaluation. There's a big difference between how kids practice and how they compete, so it will be good to see their competitive spirit." The competition will consist of primarily Division II schools.

"There will be some really good running programs, including a few in the Top 20 for Division II," Berryhill said. "It's an excellent opportunity to see where we are as a team."

Sophomore Holly Page is expected to lead the Cowgirls as she earned MW Freshman of the Year honors last season and finished 20th at the MW Championship. Christine Nelson and Abi Bever are also among the returning leaders in 2012.

The Cowboys will be led by junior Garrett Zans, who earned all-region honors last year with a 22nd-place finish at the Mountain Regional. He also achieved 31st place at the MW Championship and competed in four other events in which he finished among the team leaders.

Results from the meet can be found at the UCCS cross country home page at gomountainlions.com.
