After two of the best races of his career, Garrett Zans will represent the University of Wyoming cross country program at the NCAA Championships on Saturday in Terre Haute, Ind. The senior will race the best runners in the nation over a 10-kilometer course at 10 a.m. MT. Links for live results and video will be available on GoWYO.com.

A native of Rock Springs, Zans placed fifth at the Mountain West Championships on Nov. 1 to earn All-MW First-Team honors, before crossing the line 14th at the NCAA Mountain Regional last Friday to claim All-Region accolades. He was the fourth individual not on a qualifying team at the regional meet, as he became the first Cowboy to qualify for the national meet since Mark Korir in 2008. He is also the first Wyoming native to run for the Cowboys at the NCAA Championships since Buffalo-native Joe Hall in 2000.

"The advantage of qualifying for the NCAA Championships as an individual is that you can run for yourself and go for it, while not having to worry about the team aspect of the race," UW head coach Bryan Berryhill said. "Garrett ran neck and neck with guys at the conference meet and the regional meet that will earn All-America honors, so the plan for him on Saturday is to get in the top 50 early and just race his heart out from there."

Wyoming History at the NCAA Championships
Garrett Zans is the first Wyoming runner to qualify for the national meet since Mark Korir in 2008, while Korir is also the last UW runner to earn All-America honors with his 19th-place finish in 2007. This is the 11th time a Cowboy has qualified as an individual, as Zans is the first Wyoming native to run for the Cowboys at the national meet since Buffalo-native Joe Hall in 2000. The Wyoming men have qualified seven times as a team, including the last time in 1986. The Cowgirls have qualified six times individually, but never as a team. Zans Always Near the Front
Senior Garrett Zans has consistently been one of Wyoming's top distances runners in his four seasons with the program. In 24 career races, he has finished in UW's top three in all but one race and he has finished in UW's top two in 19. He has led the Cowboys in 10 races during his career, including winning the individual title at the Utah Valley Invite on Sept. 13.
