Before Wyoming: An athlete capable of playing all three guard positions, Sobey was a standout at Cochise College in Douglas, Ariz., during his two seasons with the program. The 6-4, 185-pound guard helped head coach Jerry Carrillo and the Apaches continue a history of success that included 16-straight appearances in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division I Region I playoffs and seven appearances in the title game in 11 years.

As a sophomore in 2011-12, Sobey averaged 16.5 points, 6.9 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.8 steals per game to help Cochise go 25-6 overall and earn its sixth Arizona Community College Athletic Conference title. The Apaches were ranked 16th in the NJCAA Division I national poll before falling in the semifinals of the Region I tournament. Sobey was an Honorable Mention All-American and earned First-Team All-Conference and First-Team All-Region honors, while shooting 48 percent (181-of-380) from the field and 32 percent (37-of-117) beyond the arc during the season.

During his freshman campaign, Sobey averaged 7.9 points, 2.9 rebounds and 1.2 assists off the bench. Cochise went 22-11 that season and won the NJCAA Region I championship.
