Cowboy Basketball Promotes Watsabaugh
May 9, 2014
LARAMIE, Wyo. - University of Wyoming men's basketball coach Larry Shyatt announced Friday the promotion of Rob Watsabaugh from graduate assistant coach to Director of Player Development and Strength and Conditioning. Watsabaugh replaces Chris Poole, who accepted a teaching position at McMurry University in Abilene, Texas.
"I speak for our entire staff and team when I say we are thrilled to have Rob in a full-time position with our basketball program," Shyatt said. "Ever since his playing days, Rob has shown a tremendous work ethic and seriousness in regards to our profession both on the court and in the classroom. I know our basketball family is excited to officially welcome our Jackson, Wyo.,-native to our staff."
A native of Jackson, Wyo., Watsabaugh has been a member of the Wyoming men's basketball program for the last five seasons. He spent 2012-13 and 2013-14 as a graduate assistant on the coaching staff, as he helped the Cowboys to postseason berths each season. Watsabaugh was pursuing his master's degree in kinesiology and health promotion during that time and will graduate this fall. Previously, he was a forward for the Cowboys from 2009-10 to 2011-12. He was a valuable reserve for Wyoming off the bench in his senior season, as he played in 31 of UW's 33 games and helped the Cowboys to their first postseason berth in four years. Watsabaugh graduated from UW with his bachelor's degree in kinesiology and health promotion in May of 2012.
"I'd like to thank coach Shyatt and the rest of the staff for believing in me and keeping me as part of this program," Watsabaugh said. "I couldn't be happier with the position and being able to stay here in Laramie and help Wyoming basketball in any way I can. I'm very glad the coaching staff allowed me to stay and still be part of the family here."
