Cowboy Basketball Finalizes 2011-12 Schedule
Aug. 11, 2011
The University of Wyoming men's basketball team finalized its 2011-12 schedule on Thursday. The first season of the Cowboys' second tenure under head coach Larry Shyatt features seven Mountain West home games, in addition to 12 home games during the non-conference schedule. The non-conference schedule was originally announced in June.
UW's conference slate is highlighted by several marquee Saturday showdowns in the Arena-Auditorium. The Pokes kick off the MW schedule against New Mexico (Jan. 14), square off with archrival Colorado State (Jan. 21) and host UNLV (Feb. 4) -- all on Saturdays.
The non-conference schedule features anticipated contests also, including a game versus Bradley on Saturday, Dec. 3 that is part of the Mountain West/Missouri Valley Conference Challenge. The Pokes have a home game against Louisiana Tech of the Western Athletic Conference on Sunday, Nov. 27 in the Jim Thorpe Classic during the Thanksgiving weekend. Wyoming will host Portland State, Maryland Eastern Shore and Louisiana Tech on Friday, Nov. 25, Saturday, Nov. 26 and Sunday, Nov. 27, respectively.
Another key non-conference series that has been renewed beginning this season is a series versus the Colorado Buffaloes. Wyoming will travel to Boulder, Colo., on Friday, Dec. 9 to face the Buffs. CU will return to Laramie the following season in 2012-13 in a four-year series that has been negotiated between the two Front Range rivals.
"I think this schedule has a good balance of competitive, non-conference games that will help prepare us for a tough Mountain West Conference schedule," said Shyatt. "We worked hard at scheduling a number of home games early in the season to give our young team a chance to play in front of our great Wyoming fans. That, in turn, will give our fans numerous opportunities to see their Cowboys play in the Arena-Auditorium. We need our fans now more than ever to come out to the Double A and help us recreate that exciting atmosphere that we all remember."
"My coaching staff and I appreciate the efforts of the Mountain West Conference in providing a very balanced and fair conference schedule."
UW's other four home conference games feature defending MW champion San Diego State on Tuesday, Jan. 24, Front-Range foe Air Force on Wednesday, Feb. 15, new conference member Boise State on Saturday, Feb. 25 and TCU on Tuesday, Feb. 28.
The Cowboys will hit the road for seven conference games this season. Regional road games include Air Force on Wednesday, Jan. 18 and Colorado State on Saturday, Feb. 18. The 14-game MW format is a double round robin and has each team playing two games per week. All 14 of UW's conference games and the Cowboys' home game versus UC Irvine (Dec. 13) on will be televised on the The Mtn.
The Mountain West Championship will once again be held at UNLV's Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas. All eight conference teams will participate with the quarterfinals on March 8 on The Mtn., the semifinals March 9 on CBS Sports Network and the final March 10 on NBC Sports Network, formerly VERSUS.
