Aug. 26, 2010
LARAMIE, Wyo. -
With the 2010-11 college basketball season on the horizon, the Wyoming Cowboy basketball schedule was announced on Thursday and will feature 18 home games and 17 games that will be televised.
Of the Pokes' 31 games, 15 will be against teams who played in the postseason last year--BYU (NCAA), Missouri (NCAA), New Mexico (NCAA), San Diego State (NCAA), UNLV (NCAA), Colorado State (CBI), Indiana State (CBI), Northern Colorado (CBI), Wisconsin-Green Bay (CBI) and South Dakota (CIT).
"It is always a good day when you finalize the schedule and we are looking forward to getting the 2010-11 season underway," UW head basketball coach Heath Schroyer said. "I really like a lot of things about this schedule including the 18 home games, the 15 games against postseason teams from last year and the different home-and-home series that we have set for the future. We are also looking forward to traveling to Cancun and hope that some of our fans can spend the Thanksgiving holiday with us in Cancun.
"It is our goal to compete for a Mountain West Conference championship every year and put ourselves in a position to play in the postseason. I believe this schedule allows us to do that."
The 2010-11 home season will be highlighted by marquee Saturday MWC games against New Mexico (Jan. 8), Utah (Jan. 15), Colorado State (Feb. 5) and TCU (Feb. 12).
In addition, the Cowboys will play 10 home games during non-conference play. They will host four games during the month of November and six during December.
One exciting piece of the non-conference schedule will be Wyoming's participation in the Cancun Challenge. The Pokes will travel to Cancun, Mexico prior to Thanksgiving and play on Nov. 23 and Nov. 24 at the Aventura Spa Resort. The Cowboys will play Missouri on Nov. 23 and either Providence or La Salle on Nov. 24.
As part of the Cancun Challenge, the Cowboys will host two games prior to traveling over the border. They will host North Florida on Nov. 18 and Western Illinois on Nov. 20, both of which will be played in the Arena-Auditorium.
The Cowboys will also participate in the second annual Mountain West-Missouri Valley Challenge and will host their first game in challenge history on Dec. 4. The Pokes will welcome the Indiana State Sycamores in a game that will be televised live by The Mtn.
All of Wyoming's 16 MWC games will be televised. Of those, 13 will be aired on The Mtn. and three will be on CBS College Sports. CBS C will televise UW's home games against New Mexico and Colorado State, as well as their road game at Utah.
The Cowboys will open the season with an exhibition game against Peru State on Nov. 6, before beginning the regular season on Nov. 13 against Kean University. Practice for the 2010-11 season will begin on Fri., Oct. 15.
In looking to the future, the contracts with South Dakota, UC Irvine, Wisconsin-Green Bay and Houston Baptist set up future games for the Cowboys. They will host South Dakota and UC Irvine in 2011-12, and Houston Baptist in both 2011-12 and 2012-13. The Pokes will travel to Wisconsin-Green Bay in 2011-12.
