LARAMIE, Wyo. -

University of Wyoming head basketball coach Steve McClain announced today that Steve Leven of Airds, New South Wales, Australia has joined the Wyoming Basketball program.

Leven is a 6'5", 190-pound two-guard that is transferring from the University of Texas. He will sit out of competition this season to satisfy NCAA transfer rules, and will be a sophomore for the 2004-05 season.

"We are excited about the addition of Steve (Leven) to our program," said McClain. "He gives us another strong scorer, and an outstanding athlete. Steve has been looking for the right situation for himself at the college level, and he believes that our program is that situation. He will be able to practice with us this season and get accustomed to our program. Next season, I expect him to be a solid contributor for us.

"With six seniors and three juniors on this year's team, we wanted to bring some younger players into the program. With Steve, we get a young man who is a sophomore in eligibility but brings with him added experience of playing at a high level internationally."

Leven was selected to the All-Australia 16 and Under team and the All-Australia 18 and Under Team. He played his prep basketball in the United States. While at Laurinburg Institute in Laurinburg, N.C., Leven was ranked among the Top 75 high school players in the United States by such recruiting services as HoopScoop and PrepStar. Leven attended the Nike All-American Camp as a senior. Both his sophomore and junior years of high school, Leven played in the A.B.C.D. All-Star game for underclassmen. He was invited to play in both the Jordan High School All-Star game and the Adidas Roundball Classic, but was unable to participate after suffering a sprained ankle at the conclusion of his senior season.

"The recent success of the Wyoming program is what attracted me here," said Leven. "I felt after considering different options, this was the best place for me to reach my goals, both athletically and academically. I believe this program is only going to get better, and I want to be part of that."

Out of high school, Leven was recruited by Auburn, California, Oklahoma State and Texas, among others. He originally attended Auburn in the fall of 2002, before transferring to the University of Texas for the 2003 spring semester.

The son of Valarie and Steve Leven, his father is in the military but is also a professional rugby player. Leven played for Chris Chaney at Laurinburg Institute in Laurinburg, N.C.
