Wyoming Men Tabbed Sixth in Preseason Poll
Oct. 12, 2011
The University of Wyoming men's basketball team has been picked to finish sixth in the Mountain West, as the conference announced its 2011-12 preseason media poll and all-conference team today at the league's media day in The Mtn. Studios. The Cowboys garnered 68 points from media covering the MW.
"Polls and projections like this are great for the media and fans, but our staff is more concerned about how we finish the season than start," UW head coach Larry Shyatt said. "We're focused on improving each day and the process of making a better program. This is a starting point for us, so we'll focus on improving from here."
New Mexico was tabbed the preseason favorite to win the 2011-12 regular-season title by capturing 22 of 26 first-place votes for 203 points. UNLV received the remaining four first-place votes and 183 points to finish second, followed by San Diego State with 158 points for third place. Colorado State received 119 points to finish fourth, followed by Air Force (78 points) and Wyoming. TCU (64 points) was seventh and Mountain West newcomer Boise State (63 points) rounded out the poll in eighth.
UNM senior Drew Gordon was named the MW Preseason Player of the Year, while San Diego State sophomore Xavier Thames is the Preseason Newcomer of the Year. Fellow Lobo Hugh Greenwood was tabbed Preseason Freshman of the Year. Gordon is joined by UNLV's Oscar Bellfield, TCU's Hank Thorns, New Mexico's Kendall Williams and UNLV's Chace Stanback on the preseason All-MW team.
The Cowboys host CSU-Pueblo on Saturday, Nov. 5 in the Arena-Auditorium for an exhibition game, before tipping off the regular season against Western State on Saturday, Nov. 12 in Laramie.
