Cowboys and Pioneers Meet on Saturday Afternoon in the Arena-Auditorium
Nov. 28, 2008
LARAMIE, Wyo. -
When the Cowboy basketball team takes the floor on Saturday afternoon against the Denver Pioneers, they will be looking for their first 5-0 start to a season since 1997-98. The game is set to tip-off at 4 p.m. in the Arena-Auditorium and will be televised live by The Mtn.
During that 1997-98 season, the Cowboys won all five of their November games before falling to Creighton, on the road, 70-81. During that November, the Cowboys and head coach Larry Shyatt won home games over Denver, Eastern Illinois, Southern Utah and Utah State. They also won one road game at Colorado.
The current 4-0 Cowboys are led by four players who are averaging double-figures in scoring. Redshirt freshman Afam Muojeke leads the team, and the Mountain West Conference, with an average of 22.0 points a game. Senior Brandon Ewing is averaging 18.8 points a game and is followed by senior Tyson Johnson (17.5 ppg) and redshirt senior Sean Ogirri (12.0 ppg). Johnson leads the team in rebounding, averaging 9.5 per game.
Ewing has also done a terrific job of distributing the ball this season. In fact, he leads the MWC in assists, averaging 6.25 per game.
Denver enters Saturday's game with an 0-3 record. They opened the 2008-09 season on the road with a pair of losses--at Northern Iowa (56-61) and at Lamar (48-61). Last Wednesday in their home opener, Denver lost in overtime to Northern Colorado, 66-71.
Beginning with the 1914-15 season, the Wyoming Cowboys and Denver Pioneers have built a long, rich rivalry. In fact, this year's meeting is the 144th in the series and also marks the 16th consecutive season that the two schools have played. Wyoming holds a 97-46 series advantage over the Pioneers.
