Cowboys and Cowgirls Travel to Casper for BlueCross BlueShield of Wyoming Shootout

For the tenth straight year, the BlueCross BlueShield of Wyoming Shootout will feature both the Wyoming Cowboy and Cowgirl basketball programs, this Saturday, Dec. 13, in Casper, Wyo. The Cowgirls will take on North Dakota State at 1 p.m. and the Cowboys will play Northern Iowa at 3:30 p.m. The games will be played at the Casper Events Center.

Over the past nine years, the Cowboys are 6-3 (.667) and the Cowgirls are 7-2 (.778) in the Wyoming Shootout.

The Cowgirls enter this Saturday's game with a 5-3 overall record. They earned a road sweep over Weber State, 78-75, and Idaho State, 61-55, last weekend. Three Cowgirls are currently scoring in double-figures, led by freshman Emma Langford (14.6 points per game). She is followed by senior Megan McGuffey and freshman Kristen Scheffler with 10.5 points each. McGuffey also leads the Cowgirls with 7.5 rebounds per contest.

The North Dakota State women are currently 4-3 overall. Sophomore Abby Plucker leads the way with 16.3 points and 6.4 rebounds per game, while guard Inger Hodgson is adding 12.9 points and 4.4 rebounds. This is the first meeting between the two schools.

UW fans from northern parts of the state, such as Kristen Scheffler's hometown of Lovell, will get a chance to watch both Wyoming teams on Saturday.


The Cowboys are off to a 6-1 start after splitting their first road trip of the season last week. The Pokes' lineup features four players who are scoring in double figures. Redshirt freshman Afam Muojeke led the team, and the Mountain West Conference, with 19.0 points a game. Seniors Tyson Johnson and Brandon Ewing are currently averaging 16.0 points a game while redshirt senior Sean Ogirri is averaging 14.1 ppg. Johnson is the leading rebounder in the MWC with 9.6 boards a game.

The Northern Iowa Panthers are 5-4 on the season after playing a tough schedule thus far. They have recorded wins over Denver (61-56), Texas Southern (74-67), Chicago State (81-70), Auburn (67-61) and North Dakota (69-49). They have suffered a couple of tough losses including a loss to Marquette (43-73), at Iowa State in overtime (66-71) and at Iowa (46-65). The Cowboys lead the overall series with UNI, 2-0.

Ticket prices range from $18 fro reserved seating to $15 for general admission. Tickets admit fans to both the men's and the women's game.
