Cowboy Basketball Opens Four-Game Homestand on Wednesday Night
Dec. 29, 2009
LARAMIE, Wyo. -
This Wednesday night, the Wyoming Cowboy basketball team will open a four-game homestand by hosting the Akron Zips at 7 p.m. in the Arena-Auditorium.
The Cowboy basketball program will be looking for its' 300th win inside the Arena-Auditorium when they take on Akron. The Pokes are currently 299-100 (.749) at home since the AA opened its' doors for the final home game of the 1981-82 season.
Reaching that 300th win will not be an easy task as the Cowboys will face a very tough Akron team. After reaching the NCAA Tournament last March, the Zips have picked up right where they left off. They are currently 9-3 overall and have won five consecutive games. They return 13 lettermen and four starters from that 23-13 team in 2008-09.
Akron will be UW's second straight opponent that played in last year's NCAA Tournament. In addition, three of UW's last four opponents played in the Big Dance last March--Tennessee, Northern Iowa and now Akron.
Wednesday's game will mark the fourth all-time meeting between Wyoming and Akron. The Cowboys lead the all-time series 2-1 but Akron won the most recent meeting, 96-71 in Akron on Dec. 1, 2007. The Cowboys won the only other meeting in Laramie, 84-86, during the 1999-00 season.
After missing the first three games of his career with a knee injury, Cowboy sophomore Afam Muojeke has returned to the lineup with a vengeance. Since the injury, Muojeke has scored at least 15 points in four straight games. He is currently the second leading scorer in the Mountain West Conference with an average of 17.1 points per game.
While no Akron players are averaging double-figures in scoring, seven different players are averaging seven or more points a game. They are led by junior forward Brett McKnight, who is averaging 9.8 points per game. Senior forward Jimmy Conyers is Akron's leading rebounder with 5.7 per game.
Following Wednesday's game, Wyoming will close out non-conference play by hosting Adams State on Saturday afternoon. The Cowboys and Grizzlies are set to tip off at 2 p.m. from the Arena-Auditorium.
