War Memorial Stadium Dedicated Against Nationally Ranked Baylor

Having played at Corbett Field since 1925, the Cowboys dedicated a new home, War Memorial Stadium, on Sept. 23, 1950. The stage couldn't have been bigger as a nationally ranked Baylor squad came to town in hopes of ruining Wyoming's historic event. It was actually the second game played in the venue, as Wyoming defeated Montana State 61-13 in the previous week.

Baylor was led by quarterback Hayden Fry, who eventually went on to a Hall of Fame career as a head coach at SMU and Iowa. The Cowboys were beaten soundly by the Bears the previous year and were seeking revenge. With star tailback Eddie "Boom Boom" Talboom not featured in the offensive backfield due to an injury, Royal McMullen emerged and scored on a short run in the opening period. Talboom kicked the point after, providing Wyoming with a 7-0 advantage. That one score proved crucial, as Baylor fought back, advancing to the 3-yard line on one drive. The Cowboys did not yield, keeping the Bears out of the end zone. On the game's final possession, the Bears put together a 74-yard drive to the Wyoming 1-yard line. After four tries, Baylor could not get the ball into the end zone and the Cowboys' second goal-line stand of the game secured a 7-0 win. Wyoming went on to achieve an undefeated 10-0 season and earned UW's first bowl bid to the 1951 Gator Bowl.

About the #120CowboyTough Countdown

The 2013 season will mark the 120th anniversary of Wyoming Cowboy Football. To commemorate that anniversary, we will be counting down some of the great memories and moments from Wyoming football history over the next eight weeks leading up to the Cowboys' season opener at Nebraska on Aug. 31.

The 2013 "Countdown to Kickoff" will take Wyoming fans through Cowboy Football history chronologically. The first week will highlight some of the memorable moments from the period from the first season in 1893 through the 1940s. Then each successive week, the countdown will recall great moments from the 1950s, `60s, 70s, 80, 90s, 2000s and the current decade.

Our countdown will only touch on some of the greatest moments, but we encourage you, the Wyoming fans, to share your favorite memories through the official University of Wyoming Athletics Twitter (@wyoathletics) and Facebook pages (Wyoming Cowboys). Fans are encouraged to use #120CowboyTough when sharing their memories.
