Early Draft Picks

Two UW players were selected in the first round of the 1976 NFL Draft, Aaron Kyle and Lawrence Gaines. It still is the only instance in which two UW players have been picked in the first round in program history. They joined just one other first-round pick, Ron "Pedro" Billingsley in 1967.

Gaines was a 6-foot-1, 226-pound bruising fullback for the Pokes' wishbone attack. He rushed for 894 yards as a senior, and was on pace for a 1,000-yard season until an injury slowed him in the last game. Kyle was a natural athlete at cornerback for the Pokes, and had nice size at 5-11, 180 pounds. Named as a team captain his senior season of 1975, he tallied 574 career defensive points and left the program as the career tackles leader.

Both received invitations to postseason all-star games, and played well enough to be selected in the 1976 NFL Draft. Gaines went 16th to the Detroit Lions, while Kyle went 27th to the Dallas Cowboys. Gaines played four seasons for the Lions, while Kyle played seven years with the Cowboys and the Denver Broncos. Kyle played in two Super Bowls with Dallas, and in 1977, was a Super Bowl champion.

About the #120CowboyTough Countdown

The 2013 season will mark the 120th anniversary of Wyoming Cowboy Football. To commemorate that anniversary, we will be counting down some of the great memories and moments from Wyoming football history over the next eight weeks leading up to the Cowboys' season opener at Nebraska on Aug. 31.

The 2013 "Countdown to Kickoff" will take Wyoming fans through Cowboy Football history chronologically. The first week will highlight some of the memorable moments from the period from the first season in 1893 through the 1940s. Then each successive week, the countdown will recall great moments from the 1950s, `60s, 70s, 80, 90s, 2000s and the current decade.

Our countdown will only touch on some of the greatest moments, but we encourage you, the Wyoming fans, to share your favorite memories through the official University of Wyoming Athletics Twitter (@wyoathletics) and Facebook pages (Wyoming Cowboys). Fans are encouraged to use #120CowboyTough when sharing their memories.

Enjoy the countdown, and we look forward to seeing you in War Memorial Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 7 for the home opener versus the Idaho Vandals.
