#120CowboyTough, Kickoff Week: Nebraska Comes To Town
Aug 25, 2013
LARAMIE, Wyo. -
Nebraska Comes To Town
Just two seasons ago, fans were treated to the biggest home game in Wyoming Football history. The mighty Huskers of Nebraska came to War Memorial Stadium in what was one of the most anticipated matchups in Cowboy Football history.
Both teams came into the contest sporting perfect 3-0 marks. Visiting Laramie for the first time in history, Nebraska was ninth in the nation in both the Associated Press and USA Today Coaches polls. In front of a capacity crowd of 32,617, Wyoming battled with Nebraska admirably. Quarterback Brett Smith, just a freshman, played well against a stout Nebraska defense. He hit wide receiver Mazi Ogbonna for a 48-yard TD strike just before halftime, and the Pokes went to intermission down 14-7.
But the Huskers went to work on the ground in the third quarter to score 17 unanswered points, putting the Cowboys at a 31-7 deficit until midway through the fourth quarter. The Cowboys fought back, as Smith tossed a TD to wide receiver Robert Herron from 10 yards out to cut the deficit to 31-14 with 8:13 remaining.
Again, Nebraska went to the ground to seal the game with an 11-play, 80-yard drive. The Huskers didn't attempt a pass on the drive and effectively sealed the game with 11-straight rushes for the touchdown to go up 38-14 with 3:57 to go.
The loss didn't slow the Cowboys, as they went on to win eight games and earn a berth in the New Mexico Bowl to end the season.
